Nobody Watches the Video
Who says what they feel? Better yet, who really knows what they feel? Or, even better, who really wants to know? And, more real still, who can distinguish what they feel, what can be felt, what should be felt…?
Martin Crimp worked for a market research company transcribing tapes of interviews conducted with specific groups of people. In these surveys, the author perceived that any question about consumption habits can open a crack inside us, revealing things, even feelings and realities, that without knowing them made us feel more comfortable, though not happier.
In a tone of almost absurd comedy, Martin Crimp creates a highly intelligent text in which everyday words involuntarily reveal what no one wants to say, much less admit.
Eight characters (played by six actors and actresses, explicitly designed by the author for reasons that will become obvious) meet by chance during a street survey about frozen pizzas. With this ironic and humorous excuse, we enter their minds, their lives, and everything they don’t say.
It is 1991, the Berlin Wall has fallen, the Cold War has ended with capitalism’s triumph, the 21st century is coming to an end, the world is pointing to a new order, and therefore emphasis begins on the values that had shaped the patriarchal world: I, here and now, youth, money… Within this labyrinth of a patriarchal society, the characters live by looking the other way at the darkest parts of themselves.
Working for a successful market research company, mysterious and apparently organized by a man with unconfessed pedophilic tendencies, everyone else slowly enters this world…
A great play in which words try not to say what is really happening inside. An almost sinister work, with characters invaded by a sadness and loneliness they don’t even know.
